I Do Not Go To The Bookstore

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I change and be somebody else

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I am forced to acquire and spend

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I become greedy and want more

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I cannot control,
Do evil to the core

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I act on evil thoughts and hurt others

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I trade my soul to the devil’s cajole

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I am a not a master of my body and soul

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I refuse to act right and give in to temptation

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I would not know when to say “enough” when books seem to cough

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I do not know when to put down a book that screams “Save me! Own me!”

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I forget to walk away
When the tempting gets tough

I do not go to the bookstore
Lest I fail to recall that books are treasures,
And as in all treasures…
I cannot have them all.
