I Cannot Afford to Share

I cannot afford to share
I cannot allow what’s mine to be “just” your fancy.
Do not put to waste what’s mine…
Such a waste!

You pluck and pick like it’s candy…
By two’s, by pinch, as if there’s plenty.
You barely realize that one piece sustains me…
To last me a day…
It’s not my luxury.
It’s my necessity!

Abuse and exploit me…
In the future…
Where I am certain to endure…
When I have my own money.
For now, I don’t even have a penny.
What I have is all there is to me.
Please do not ask…
Do not force me to give.

I cannot afford to share.
At least, not yet.
So please consider, even just a bit…
My temporary tightfistedness.
It pains me so to let things go.
For some little things are great to me…
some little things are not for vice.

From your standpoint, I’m petty.
You probably resent me.
You don’t get why I’m stingy.
You think I’m making a fuss over nothing,
When this “nothing” is my everything
– My daily living!

I wait and work for a single cent.
Whereas, you get paid by dollars and extras…
Your certain employment.
The world is your chum.
I’m a stay-at-home mum.

You probably will get rich in the next five years
And I, well…
I’ll be dealing with tears and fears.

There’s promise for you…
Perhaps for me, too…

But ‘til then, please do not take from me.
Don’t ask.
Don’t simply think that…
what I have is unbelievably free.
Use your money and your stockpile of gold.
I’ve said it; sharing is not yet mine to afford.

What I have is what I need;
no extras or fancies.
So avert your eyes…
Look elsewhere to fund your vanity!
